However, while Scorpion had to build itself from the ground up, Limitless is coming into things with a nice chunk of its world already created, and that benefit shines through greatly in the premiere episode. The network already struck gold once in the last 12 months with a procedural series built on the backbone of a genius main character in Scorpion, so it stands to reason the network’s capable of doing it again. Limitless is a fascinating little series that could turn into a big winner for CBS. It makes promises of long-form arc, but doesn’t forget that the singular episode of the moment must come first – at least in the case of a show such as this. In many ways, it’s not far removed from the likes of The X-Files. It’s procedural storytelling disguised as serialized narrative. However, in Limitless, Brian’s introduction is the case-of-the-week. In the movie of Limitless, Cooper played the lead, Eddie. While he doesn't star in the CBS series, he does appear in the pilot episode to kick the action off and is open to returning for additional. In fact, this was the biggest thing hurting Fox’s Minority Report. Many pilots often fall into the trap of trying to introduce a premise while also attempting a miniaturized case-of-the-week. It’s fun, intriguing and even smart at times. The hour run-time flies by in a flash and plays much like a non-stop, adrenaline fueled roller coaster ride. The reason the show’s narrative efficiency is so important to note is because of how well it makes everything move. But, while that’s all well and good, the best part of the pilot is its pacing. Many of the film’s visual flairs are utilized to perfection on the small screen (like the world going from muted blue to bright yellow when Brian takes the pill) without feeling like they’re being shoved into the CBS visual palette which has never really felt that dynamic stylistically. Of course, that isn’t to say one needs to see the original movie in order to understand the pilot, but the show does benefit in a few ways if the viewer has.
